Discovering volumes about ourselves at Book Week

The week after Chinese New Year, from March 23 to 27, Concordia International School was a whirlwind of activities. Why? Because it was the once-a-year week that all the students love: Book Week! It was a week where we could let our imaginations run wild. But what really made this week different from all the others is the amazing author that came: Sally Crabtree.

Sally Crabtree is a writer as well as singer. She has a soft voice like the spring breeze and can make beautiful songs and poems in a heartbeat. The first time we met her, I could tell everybody was shocked by how different she looked. She wore a vibrant pink dress with big flowers lining the edge along with black boots that went “click, clack” on the floor as she walked. But most unique of all was the curly pink wig she always wore. She had an English accent, which was both elegant and, at the same time, friendly and welcoming.

Everywhere she went creativity followed. In the week she was here, we made hundreds of poems, thousands of songs, and tried all sorts of new things — like making “magic rings” and “eating” words. All these things we wouldn’t have done if not for Sally Crabtree. Each day we discovered something about ourselves that we didn’t know before. Some of us realized that we actually loved writing; while others found out they were really good at it. I found that even when some things might look boring from the outside, they are really fun once you try them.

Although Book Week has passed, Sally Crabtree’s warm smile and kind eyes will always be in our hearts.
