Giving Tree Project inspiring SCIS community
AT Shanghai Community International School, community awareness is embedded in our curriculum where our aim is to help students develop into responsible and confident contributors to the world around them. Throughout the year, students are provided with meaningful opportunities to be involved in a number of different community service projects. The Giving Tree Project is one such example.
A charity initiated and run by Community Center Shanghai, Giving Tree aims to inspire children in need by providing them with gift bags filled with winter clothes and school supplies. Each bag is assigned to a specific child with their preferences and details in mind. Since 2013, over 100,000 gift bags have been distributed in Shanghai and neighboring provinces.
In late September, the Lower School Student Council at SCIS Hongqiao began efforts to seek out donations from the SCIS community. By mid-October, they had already surpassed their target of 100 bags and had to order more!
On October 31 and November 7, Grade 4 and 5 student council members along with lower and upper school teacher volunteers helped ensure that all the items were in each bag and recorded any items that were missing.
On November 14, student council representatives along with teacher volunteers traveled to Green Peace Primary School in Qingpu District of Shanghai, to deliver a third of the bags. After arriving at Green Peace Primary, the bags were unloaded and carried upstairs to the classroom. A ceremony was held where the Chinese kindergarteners performed a dance followed by a speech from the school principal. SCIS students and volunteers visited the classrooms and introduced themselves. Student council members, with the help of teachers, handed out gift bags to the correct students. Recipients excitedly opened their gifts and showed a tremendous amount of gratitude and excitement for their new jackets, toys and school supplies.
In all, 61 bags were delivered to Green Peace Primary along with 39 bags and 69 bags being delivered to Soaring Talent Primary school in Pudong and Bridge Primary School in Zhejiang Province,.
Our SCIS students left knowing that all those smiles on children’s faces meant they had successfully contributed to their community.
