Helping make a difference with student council

Being a part of the student council can be understood as many things. I’ve been a member of the YCIS Student Council for three years now and can say with confidence that it’s the voice of the students.

One of our main aims is to address and respond to every student request or suggestion made. Additionally, the student council is responsible for initiating charity events and raising money for organizations such as Shanghai Healing Home and Seeds of Hope.

This year we’ve launched a fundraising drive for Heart to Heart and the senior evening formal, as well as a kindness week campaign. However, the student council does not only benefit students. Teachers and parents can turn to us for guidance and assistance in the promotion and execution of tasks and events.

One may wonder how being a part of the student council benefits the representatives themselves. The answer is easy. The student council urges us to develop the leadership, citizenship, relationship skills, and cultural values needed to operate effectively in our society. We learn to establish goals, delegate responsibility, and give directions to peers in order to undertake tasks successfully. We communicate ideas and draft proposals, as well as learn how to allocate resources and prioritize.

Being able to make a difference has motivated me to continue aspiring to achieve. The student council is dedicated to bring change and we work passionately to make our school the best it can be.
