How after-school drama built lifetime friendships

I have developed friendships that will last a lifetime thanks to my years at YCIS Pudong.
Participating in sports and after-school activities was the easiest way for me to meet people. And it was in the drama department where I instantly made friends. I came to YCIS Pudong in Year 6, and at that time I didn’t know anyone. I was coming to a brand-new school from another country.
But the second year I realized there was an after-school drama program, I joined. For the rest of the semester, I was around people with the same passion and dream as me.
Springtime came, and I finally got the opportunity to audition for the YCIS Year 5-6 musical. On the first day of rehearsals, the entire cast sat in one big circle and read through the script.
Not far into our rehearsal, everyone realized I was a comedy actor, with a comedy role. People were laughing and asking me questions and it felt amazing. These were people I didn’t know, some of whom weren’t even in my school year. But after two months of rehearsing and taking part in a fascinating show, most of them became my best friends.
The following year, I took part in the secondary musical, where I acted with kids from Year 7 all the way up to Year 13. Sometimes, people in my year level asked me why I had such a good relationship with the Year 12 and Year 13 students, and the answer is simply because I spent two months in rehearsals and two days acting in front of an audience with them.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I took my last bow in front of a Chinese audience. The time has come for my family to move back to America. I will definitely miss being a part of the amazing theatrical community at YCIS Pudong. I strongly recommend that every student joins a club, or an after-school activity, and that they consider drama. Doing so has certainly enriched my life.
