Inspired by Nepal’s amazing people

For the past two years, I have been part of the Habitat for Humanity club at Shanghai American School. Habitat for Humanity is an organization that helps build houses for families all around the world.

Every year, the club at SAS has two or three trips during school breaks. I had heard so much about the Habitat trips from friends so I decided it was an opportunity that I should experience.

This spring break I went to Nepal. It is considered an undeveloped country, as it does not have good housing and infrastructure. For this trip, 15 students from Shanghai American School went to Chitwan for nine days.

Apart from experiencing a very different culture, we also got to meet the family that we were building the house for and worked together. Every day, our team worked from 8:30am to 4:30.

We all had in mind that we are building a future for someone. It was a very hard but amazing experience as we all got to learn the techniques of building houses, working as a team and, most of all, meeting amazing people.

Now that I am back in Shanghai I can confidently say that this was the best experience I have yet had.

Nepal has shown me how much hope people can actually have. All the people we met always had a smile on their face, even if they were living with very little every day. It made me think about how amazing these people truly are.

I cannot describe how much I loved helping these people and it showed me how valuable service work is.

The disastrous earthquake that happened in Nepal after I left certainly shocked me.

I just hope people will offer help and hope that the Nepalese people still keep on smiling and being hopeful.
