Juilliard music curriculum comes to NAIS, BISS

Students at British International School in Shanghai, Puxi (BISS Puxi) and Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong (NAIS Pudong) are now reaping the benefits of a new collaboration with The Juilliard School in New York.

Both schools are now implementing an enhanced, embedded arts curriculum developed by specialists at the renowned conservatory. Additionally, they can also access support from, and engagement with, Juilliard alumni and affiliated artists.

“The aim of the new curriculum is to enhance the cultural literacy of all students, not only those with a particular interest in music, and we see that developing as they are introduced to the program which is based on the Juilliard-curated repertoire of 12 core works from across a range of genres,” says Lesley-Ann Wallace, the principal at NAIS Pudong.

“When I walk into a Year One music class and see the children totally engaged, exploring the first of these pieces and working on dynamics and notation, the depth that the program adds to our curriculum is obvious,” she adds.

With an emphasis on accessibility and works drawn from a variety of cultures and historical periods, the curriculum is delivered in compelling lessons which together form semester-long arcs. As they discover the joys of music and performance, students can also study the key technical elements and fundamentals which underpin these arts.

Also at the heart of the new curriculum is the Juilliard Creative Classroom. This online resource is packed with engaging teaching materials, recordings and videos that teachers can incorporate into lessons.

Moreover, the partnership with Juilliard will lead to regular visits to both schools from curriculum specialists, teaching artists and touring performers. These visits will give students valuable opportunities to learn from practicing professional musicians, while teachers can benefit from ongoing opportunities for professional development.

“The exclusive performing arts collaboration with The Juilliard School is a fantastic development which will provide truly world-class performing arts opportunities for students,” says Kevin Foyle, principal at BISS Puxi.

Andrea Lee, an artist and cellist from The Juilliard School, describes students from both schools as “talented and full of passion.”

“We are learning from each other and the curriculum will make it better,” she adds.
