Learning to build a wall, a beautiful green wall
WHILE collaborating with my teammates, we created a green wall which we are proud of. Our wall consists of nine angled tubes and a backing.
Because the tubes hold the plants, we decided to paint them black as the color black absorbs and attracts sunlight and heat, which can help plants grow more efficiently. We also chose to use vine plants and, in this case, we purchased fake plants for our model, because vine plants can cover up the areas that don’t have plants.
Before we were put into groups, we visited green wall and nursery websites and saw videos on DIY green walls. We created a budget based on what we saw others had done when creating a similar wall. We decided to avoid certain designs that did not take into account durability of the design and maximization of sunlight.
After research and collaboration between team members, we started to build the green wall. The final green wall product was the result of six different design modifications.
We had the chance to present this project to our classmates. We learned that eye contact and changing one’s voice level is important in order to connect better to our audience. We then presented to the SCIS head of school and administration. I learned that as we presented to different groups, we were more at ease with every new group that we presented to.
I was excited to hear that many of the audience members liked our work product and said that it was aesthetically pleasing and that it could be a way to bring nature inside.
In sum, I am thankful I could participate in building a green wall because I improved upon creating a shared vision with others, researching new ideas, and improving my presentation skills.
