Lightning strikes at SCIS
ON September 6, the Tropic Lightning Band, which is the Army Band stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, played at Shanghai Community International School's Hongqiao campus.
The group is made up of roughly 40 full-time US Army musicians. Aside from performing in Oahu, they are also stationed in Iraq every other year to perform for the soldiers. The concerts are designed to lift the morale of the troops.
Invited to Shanghai to perform at the World Expo, Tropic Lightning Band was organized to play at SCIS through its Hongqiao Upper School Band Teacher, Mindy Ruskovich.
"It was excellent for our students to see a professional concert band. After the performance, they could better understand what I teach them in terms of musicality, ensemble balance, blend and dynamics. Also, the students had a chance to see musicians who work full-time and travel and who have made a career of it."
The two-hour performance was enjoyed by SCIS students from the Pudong and Hongqiao campuses, and the whole SCIS community. The music was entertaining and lively. The band also interacted with the students, speaking to them about the wonderful opportunities with which they are presented by attending an international school.
