‘Little Zebra Guard’ guiding pedestrians in Shanghai

IT was Saturday morning, and I didn’t stay late as usual because my friends and I attended a volunteer activity organized by Haiyan club, an NGO devoted to better social order.

We were assigned to promote proper walking behavior among pedestrians. At first, one traffic police shared his daily duties and taught us some simple gestures to guide the cars and pedestrians. Then we were given some banners featuring some basic behaviors like “don’t run through the red lights.” Our assignment was to show the banners to at least 20 passers-by.

We wandered around the Huaihai Road, looking for our potential “targets.” It was very cold outside, and people came and went, just saying no to us. We were a bit upset, and we wanted to quit due to the strong wind and cold face. “You should go on! You are brave Little Zebra Guard! No one would beat you!” a teacher told us. Then we tried to convince the passers-by to stop for a few minutes and read the banners. Thank God, a family of three became our first “audience.” After listening to our explanation, the father read the sentences one by one on the banner to his 4-year-old daughter. Later, it became easier. “We must cross the road at traffic light and zebra crossings. We should wait on the pavement for the green light. Look left first, then look right, then cross the street …” We made it!

At last, every one of us got a medal as “Little Zebra Guard.” I will continue to promote the proper behavior among my friends in the future.
