Model UN broadens students’ horizons
DURING a three-day two-night trip, students from both Grade 10 and Grade 11 traveled all the way to Qingdao for the Model United Nations debate held by the International School of Qingdao. The reason why I went to this MUN debate was because I wanted to broaden my perspectives of many of the global emergent issues that are currently relevant. At the same time, I enjoyed debating and wanted to express myself to students coming from all around the world.
The conference allowed me to enter into debating and creating solutions for current issues around the globe, and it allowed me to develop collaborative and critical thinking skills by working as a group to submit and create clauses according to each issue. It also enabled us to critically question each of the clauses, testing their reliability and the ability of application. Students were required to debate over current issues in committees and come up with logical resolutions that could better help the world. Over the course of three days, there were different sessions of debate, and in the end we were able to produce a complete action paper that was supposedly sent to the Security Council for review, and they would give us feedback.
During the trip, what was most interesting was the process of the debates and the formal language that was utilized within the debate. We were not allowed to address each other in pronouns, and had to address each other as delegates of a certain country; this was a new experience for me.
I gained many things from this experience in terms of active participation, involvement in global issues, the ability to debate and answer questions on point. Students were required to actively participate in this debate as we could make a stand, submit our own clauses and finally make amendments. We were able to be involved in global affairs, and debate over information through the research we had accomplished. Lastly, we were able to express our thoughts and create an action paper as a group.
