On the fast track to brotherly love

One hand on the steering wheel, one hand on the window ledge. Quill loved the feeling of cool air blowing. If only there was someone to share life with.

Except. There was no one left … only empty buildings and streets. Quill felt empty.

Why do I still try? Quill couldn’t help but imagine with someone else. How would they look- maybe like a celebrity? He chuckled to himself.

What if ... there isn’t anyone at all?

Quill shook off this terrifying thought and tried not to think about it. Trying to find a distraction, Quill saw an old broken slide on the side of the road. Suddenly, his memories overtook him.

Quill remembered how he used to race with his brother from school to the playground. He wasn’t a great runner, so he lost every time. Or breaking the swing because he swung too high. Being grounded by his parents for coming home too late, now seemed priceless. Summer afternoons with nothing to worry about. All he ever knew was sleep, play, repeat.

Memories of life before the incident came one after one. Quill remembered how he used to fight over why unicorns were more believable than giraffes.

“Come on what’s more realistic? A horse with a horn or an alien-like cheetah with a long neck and legs?”

That’s what Quill used to say. Thinking of it now, he felt embarrassed and amused by how silly and naive he was. He was so ... innocent, he feared nothing in the world.

Suddenly, a photo slipped out of jacket. It was him and his brother, beside their old house. In the photo, Quill was smiling. So was his brother... Yes, yes this is why. It was the slim hope of finding a person.

Just one person would be enough for him.
