Rediscovering a natural talent for dancing

EVER since I was a child, I have had a keen interest in dancing. Like many young girls, I attended weekly ballet lessons since age six. I remember the excitement that rushed through me each time I stepped into the spacious dance studio lined with mirrors and put on my pink ballet slippers. As a child, I took part in several dance shows. I still remember the nervousness that overcame me the first time I stood in the wings waiting to go on.

Due to moving several times over the years, I found it hard to find another dance school and lost touch with the dancer in me. After coming to Shanghai, a close friend proposed that I should join a dance group. I was reluctant at first as I had a strong ballet background and was unfamiliar with the street dance scene. Nevertheless, I joined and after months of work slowly adjusting to dancing again, I found myself standing in front of a cheering crowd once more.

My dancing was very stiff and lacked my own color; I dreaded being placed in the front of a formation and feared large crowds watching my every move. As time went by, our group began to perform regularly and I learned to love the stage and the adrenaline rushes that sent electric shocks through my body each time the lights came down and the spotlights shone on us.

The dance studio became my second home and the mirror my best friend. Dancing has been a part of me for a long time. I fell in love with it in the first place because it allows me to express my thoughts and feelings without using any words. Dancing has helped me de-stress, meet amazing people and boost my self-confidence.
