Relief work in Nepal an eye-opening experience

After an inspiring Speech Day presentation by Mr Peter Dalglish at Dulwich College Shanghai, my family and I departed from Shanghai at the end of June to assist in the huge project of rebuilding Nepal. We took medical supplies and funds kindly donated by students and parents at the college.

On arrival, the stark contrast between our life in Shanghai and the lives of children in Nepal was clearly apparent. We witnessed the differences between city life in Kathmandu and life in Shanghai. Highrises, business blocks and luxury hotels were nowhere to be seen.

As we traveled into the hills we were briefed as to what we should expect when we arrived at a local school. Words could not have prepared us for the experience we had. Children the same age as my younger siblings studied in a school with no walls, bamboo and plastic sheet roofing and no air conditioning. They ate small portions of food in the glaring sun and sweltering heat. However, this sad truth spurred my family on to help as much as we could.

We undertook various activities with the children at their school, including teaching English, playing games and sport exercises, along with washing their hair and tending to their injuries.

We also made tables and benches with the funds provided, so the children could eat together at meal times.

The experience we had as a family of six is an experience we will cherish and never forget. We created many special bonds and friendships and we definitely encourage others to do the same. We believe that every donation, however small, can have a positive effect in improving the lives of these children.
