Reminding everyone to love

ON November 14, SSIS Senior School students and teachers were reminded to love themselves. Sarah Goh and I, both Grade 12 students, initiated a CAS activity called "Love Today" to raise awareness of the need to aid people with self-injury, depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts.

Such things happen because we believe people don't believe in themselves enough and love themselves, which is why the main theme of love today was "love yourself."

Student volunteers sold wristbands that had "love yourself" written on them and asked people to write post its on "reasons they love themselves" to remind them that there are many.

They also wrote "love" on people's arms with colorful markers as this event was inspired by To Write Love On Her Arms, an organization that gives hope for people struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury and thought of suicide.

And every year on November 13 people write "love" on their arms to make others aware of the issue and this organization. Moreover, we also had people giving out paper hearts with encouraging quotes on them to others to remind them that they are LOVED, that they MATTER and that people CARE.

The highlight of the day, however, was the performances that took place at the amphitheater outside Merlion caf in the fountain area. Students sang songs such as "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato, "Turning Tables" by Adele, "I feel pretty/unpretty" by Glee, etc.

The songs were related to the theme and I think the students and teachers really enjoyed watching everyone perform and it made everyone feel happy and good about themselves. We also had an exhibition about the importance of loving yourself to resolve issues of self injury, depression, etc and a photo gallery by some of the grade 12 students.

It was a very loving day and personally I feel like we were able to encourage people and make them realize the importance of loving themselves.
