SUIS comes out on top in China
SHANGHAI United International School's Gubei campus has emerged as the top international school in China, having received on average almost one offer per student from the world's elite universities.
SUIS Gubei is renowned for pushing the boundaries. The positive role-modeling, exemplified by its teaching staff that worked hard in empowering their students in achieving such enviable accolades, serves to show the complete dedication of all at SUIS Gubei to academic excellence.
Success does not happen without effort and adequate preparation in advance. SUIS Gubei has been hosting representatives from universities worldwide who give information seminars. In February, two professors working at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology came to the school and gave an excellent presentation to the students and parents. They explained the admissions process of a world-renowned university in the USA is usually made up of two parts. When a student applies to the university, their application is copied and sent to two designated professors who will both read it through. Neither professor knows the other so that there is no communication between them about the applications. They give a grade to the student, of A, B or C. When a student passes with two Bs or above, they enter the next round.
Crucial role
Instead of consisting of two people, the second round consists of a team of people - usually professors, who debate and argue over which students to keep, which to wait-list, and which to reject. However, they take no more than a few minutes over each student, so results are settled fairly quickly and students who fail to interest particular professors may be discarded. If certain professors think that they see potential in a student in a particular field, they may play a crucial role in securing a place for him/her. The students who pass this round of scrutiny are usually those who are accepted.
But what do they actually look for in potential students? Three simple, basic qualities: reliability/consistency, creativity and intellectual capacity. In the transcript, applicants must show sufficient evidence of all three factors, and the more the better. Reliability and consistency are reflected through long-term projects and leadership values, and show that you are someone who can stick to your tasks and finish them to standard. Creativity is described as "making connections between things that are not obvious." Intellectual capability, unsurprisingly, is reflected through standardized test scores, but also through how quickly you can master new challenges (e.g. taking up a musical instrument, learning a new language) and whether or not your grades "grow" over time. Students at SUIS Gubei and others learned much from this event in addition to other highly informative seminars held at the school.
SUIS Gubei is redefining academic education in Shanghai by leading from the front. Teachers and school leaders are highly qualified with degrees from the very best universities of the world. This is a key motivating factor for the students in attaining academic, social and personal excellence as the teachers know exactly what it takes to study and attain at the highest level. Teachers encourage students to achieve their full potential and this is shown by the intense interest from leading universities in admitting SUIS pupils who are creative and independent learners.
SUIS Gubei is determined to equip its students with the skills and self-awareness to ensure they can thrive effectively in a competitive world. SUIS Gubei Grade 12 students are now looking forward to the IB exams in May.
