Storm overshadows brothers’ fun game

Bill carefully pushed open the window and John gasped at his older brother.

Adrenaline pumping through their bodies, they leapt out of the window and ran toward the park.

“A typhoon is coming through town tonight. Be careful.”

The words of their parents reverberated through Bill’s head as he drew further away from home.

The night was especially bright, as if the moon knew they were coming, while the wind whistled around them.

Their laughter filled the air marking that they were having the time of their lives.

“Why don’t we play hide and seek instead?” Within minutes, John was bounding off into the park.

A feeling of uneasiness crept up Bill’s back as he watched his younger brother run off excitedly, but he quickly tucked it away.

“Nine, ten,” Bill cried as he ran after his brother.

The wind picked up and rustled the leaves. Whenever the leaves rustled, Bill would run toward the sound only to find that the wind was playing a prank on him.

Soon, dark clouds gathered in the sky and tiny drops of rain began pelting down.

Bill grew anxious as his parents’ words resounded through his brain.

John was still nowhere to be seen as the rain picked up. Bill’s feet broke into a run, matching the pace of his trembling heart. Darkness threatened to swallow him.

“John! John! Come out!” Bill felt his heart sink in the deafening silence.

After running around the park and calling for John, he dragged his feet back to where he started.

By then, his clothes were drenched and he could only think about the lashing he would receive from his parents.

All of a sudden, he heard the distant cries of a boy. His face lit up and he ran toward the sound. Distorted figures slowly pieced themselves together under the dim light.

Relief instantly flooded over Bill as he recognized his brother John.
