Strings of a violin begin lifelong music love affair

I remember, despite being only 6 years old, that I wanted to join YCIS due to their violin program for students in Year 1 through Year 3. And ever since making that decision, music has never left my side.

In recent years, I fell in love with the performing art which has helped take me out of my comfort zone.

That decision I made in Year 1 fueled my passion for music today. Ever since I picked up the violin I knew that this was what I loved doing.

Fast forward six years and I am still playing the violin, except that now it is with older students from different year levels and standards. Joining the YCIS Pudong Sinfonia ensemble group in Year 7 allowed me to experiment with different types of music I was not accustomed to.

I was also able to form a very close bond with my bandmates, even though we were not in the same year. It really felt like being a big music family sharing a similar passion for music.

After a few years of being part of the Sinfonia group, I decided to take another leap of faith and join the school production of “The Little Shop of Horrors.” This was a life-changing experience. Being able to sing in front of an audience was always a dream of mine. Thanks to this musical, I was able to showcase my voice and gain more recognition as a singer and violinist. However, accomplishing this was no easy task. In order to discover my passion for musical theater, I had to be pushed way out of my comfort zone. Through all of the ups and downs, and learning how not to be self-conscious, I was able to find myself a passion I did not think I would find.

These experiences enabled me to make a big decision for my future and choose music as one of my IGCSE subjects. It has enabled me to learn new skills and techniques in more depth. It has also helped in terms of being able to understand music, rather than just listening to it and saying, “this sounds really nice.”

Along with choosing music as one of my subjects, this year I decided to join something new — the Stage and Show Band.

This has been an exciting experience as it is very different from Sinfonia, in terms of the music style and the instruments I am playing. I joined the band as a singer, which was what I hoped to do from the beginning. This has given me a huge opportunity to showcase my talent as a musician in different fields, for which I am extremely grateful.

Music is definitely one of the biggest parts of my life and it has been so since the beginning. Being able to express myself through music has helped me cope with any difficulties, and I hope to continue to bring joy to my audiences as well as myself through the music I play.
