Summer math camp volunteers learn joys of teaching

Creativity, action and service is the best component the International Baccalaureate Program has on offer, encouraging students to pursue a variety of extra-curricular activities that help them merge into the social world. The four of us who ran a math camp this summer ... wanted to do CAS activities because it was a chance for us to learn, explore, and have fun.

The math camp was originally intended to assist students in the Xujing community who do not have easy access to English lessons. However, pupils that signed up expressed a desire to learn and improve their math skills as well as their English skills. My good friend, Peter Yeh, acknowledged their needs and felt that we should lend a helping hand. He spent long hours in devising a challenging mathematics syllabus in English in order to achieve our goal to teach the kids English and strengthen their mathematics skill at the same time.

Peter then asked his friends to help him teach the kids, and as IB students we all grabbed onto the opportunity. All four of us who ran the camp wanted to “serve” these young students, give to them what they wanted and by doing so bring them love. Our CAS supervisor has always said that it is love that you should always carry with you wherever you go; a message we were inspired to spread in our community.

Personally, this experience as a teacher has helped me understand the responsibility associated with the student-teacher relationship. I had to stand in front of the class and watch over the students. It also showed me how I could use my capabilities and bring joy to the lives of other people.
