Taking it to the next level

Summer, the warmest season of the year. The time to run around with vanilla ice cream topped with lemon curds and blueberries. The X factor of the 365 days in a year. From June to August, the colorful music of sunshine is the soundtrack of children’s play.

But for others, it’s a time for learning. The kids that play have summer brains — organs of soft nervous tissue drastically dysfunctional. However, that’s not my situation. This 2017 summer, I planned to go to writing camp.

There’s no doubting that writing is hard work. A problem I stumble upon constantly is getting my ideas down on a page in a logical yet impactful way. Writing classes can teach me empirical methods to work through my feelings of intimidation and anxiety that often come along with an writing assignment.

Writing camp is also a place for encouragement and active learning. Because the shackles of grades will be removed, I’m able to write looser. Freer. Writing is a sport, the more you practice — the more you gain. I’m able to understand my rhythms as a writer further. Writing practice is a discovery of secrets and shadows. The surprises of writing are what I pursue. I learn about myself. The hidden things. Writing camp not just develops me as a writer, but as a person.

Schools applaud outstanding grades — writing camp rewards something else. Something more important. I began 7th grade with shaky self-esteem. Then, I sprouted. I was published in my school magazine, the Eagle Review. My confidence started to soar. I’ve always felt spirited when writing. Passioned. Inspired. Now, I’m taking myself to the next level.
