Testing the limits at Concordia

I'VE been a student at Concordia International School Shanghai for seven years now. I started when I was three years old in the preschool program and now I'm in fourth grade. Concordia is the only school I've ever attended and I hope to graduate from here one day. I really love my school and our school community. My mother is from Australia and my father is from Belgium, but I've never lived in those countries - I feel at home here in Shanghai. My school is a big part of that.

Concordia has just completed a week of the standardized Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP-4) assessments in reading comprehension, verbal reasoning and math skills for grades 3 and 4. Our teacher explained to us that it was really important to get an early night sleep and to have a good breakfast in preparation for the tests. Our homework load was reduced to reading only for the week instead of our usual math, creative writing, word study, reading and Mandarin. This allowed me more time to play basketball after school which really helped to refresh my mind.

On a normal school evening I have 45 minutes of homework plus an additional 40 minutes of reading, depending on the day of the week. I usually tackle my homework as soon as I'm home from school - that's around 6pm now because of my after school schedule. After school I have rehearsals for Concordia's first Elementary School play two times a week, guitar lessons and Girl Scouts. I also train with Basketball Stars United on the weekends.

The CTP-4 test results enable Concordia to compare our student performance with similar groups. We were told the results provide a snapshot of our progress. Our school participates in the paper-pencil version of the test, which means we have to color in our answers on a multiple choice answer sheet. Our teacher told us to color in the little answer circles really well so that the answer reading machines can note our answers. I had such a sore hand at the end of the week from coloring in so many answers.

This is my second year doing the CTP-4 tests at Concordia. I told my mom that I don't know about other students but I love doing these kinds of tests. Maybe Concordia has something to do with that.
