The excitement of learning outside the classrooms
AFTER moving here from Italy about two years ago, I joined the British International School Shanghai, Pudong. I have found the school simply amazing. It has given me an opportunity to establish a network of international friends, to have contact with a highly professional team of teachers and to enjoy a variety of interesting subjects and exciting extracurricular activities.
An incredible range of over 80 different ECAs are available for students every term, with a variety of subjects ranging from cooking to music, IT applications, sports activities and many, many more! Students are given the chance to choose and take part in up to four activities a week, not counting Saturday and Sunday training sessions and competitions. Nearly all the ECAs that our school offers are free and are organized by our teachers. Some are run by outside groups and charge a small fee.
Recently, a new and popular ECA has been introduced - taekwondo. This Korean martial art, famous for its speed and high spinning kicks has caught the eye of many of the students in BISS and their excitement soars whenever they are graded.
Another traditional martial art is judo, a sport and a method of self defense.
Of course, you do not need to be a sporty to enjoy ECAs. Creative students can express their talents, thanks to the many expressive arts activities available. If you find yourself walking down the corridors of the school, you may hear the sweet harmonies of a choir singing or the voice of a potential actor enunciating verses from Shakespeare. If you are lucky, you could be the next subject for a young photographer searching for the perfect shot to be shown at the next school photographic exhibition. But team sports seem to capture the interest of the majority of the students.
Football, basketball and rugby involve competitions against other international school teams. There are also important tournaments such as ACAMIS and SISAC, where students are ready for giving their all for the colors of BISS.
