Tsinghua, Taiwan top university list

TSINGHUA University, Taiwan University and Hong Kong University topped the Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities released on June 1.

This is the first domestic university ranking which also includes universities from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

Mainland universities won four places in the top 10 while Taiwan and Hong Kong each got three spots.

Tsinghua University and Taiwan University share first place. Peking University won the seventh spot.

As for local universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University took 15th place and Fudan University came 16th.

The ranking made by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Graduate School of Education based the results on 13 indexes including university funding and the quality of academic research, students and faculty teams.

Though the mainland universities admit the highest number of PhDs, they lack influential masters, according to the report.

The top 10 universities issuing the highest number of PhD degrees all came from the mainland. In comparison, the top eight universities that admit most overseas students are from Hong Kong and Macau.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Graduate School of Education has released the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities which is also known as the Shanghai Ranking since 2003.
