WSC Tournament of Champions at Yale University
WORLD Scholar’s Cup …emm … sounds quite hard right? Yes, this competition involves five subjects: History, Biotechnology, Arts, Economics, and a Special Area (Modern Metropolis), which require a great deal of time to study and review. Throughout the Scholar’s Cup in Beijing, for individuals we had persuasive writing and the Scholar’s challenges (125 multiple choice questions), debating (three rounds) and the Scholar’s Bowl for each team (basically question and answer).”
In the beautiful Woolsey Hall of New Haven already gathered the Tournament of Champions contestants from over 40 different countries. It was amazing how easy we felt to laugh and joke around with the new friends we made over these days from all over the world.
As the closing ceremony commenced, the representatives from each country marched their flag up to the stage, followed by speeches from embassy generals from several of the competing countries. This is the largest round of World Scholar’s Cup in WSC history, with over 4,000 scholars participating at the two Globals, but only a selected 700 finalists make it to the Tournament of Champions. Six selected contestants from Shanghai United International School’s Gubei campus won a total of 19 medals, each of us striving for a goal higher than expectations.
With sounds of laughter and excitement, the host Burch announced next year’s theme: “An Unlikely World,” and the Global Rounds will take place in Hanoi and Cape Town. With the hope that we will all meet again next year at Yale University, everyone tumbled out of the entrance buzzing with excitement mingled with sadness that the Tournament of Champions has come to an end.
