YCIS students tackle wildlife protection and plastic bottles
THE environment is something I’m very concerned about personally and throughout my time at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai, I have taken an active role in the YCIS Gubei campus Environment Club.
This year, our student-run club has decided to engage in a variety of initiatives. We have, at this point, decided to focus primarily on two goals: a plastic-conservation movement urging students to use reusable bottles rather than single-use plastic bottles and an animal conservation movement. We have decided to target our animal conservation efforts very broadly, and we have already produced products that can be used at a fundraising event in the near future.
Our members, including myself, have created designs involving lesser-recognized endangered species to raise awareness for animal protection. These designs all consist of a hand-drawn animal alongside a sign such as “be a hero, save the Japanese red-crowned crane,” urging students to contribute to wildlife protection. They will be used on pins and stickers.
In order to encourage plastic-saving, we also plan to sell YCIS water bottles in the future. A presentation highlighting the world’s plastic waste problem and creative solutions to the problem (such as used-plastic-bottle art, plastic-bottle houses, and biodegradable plastic) will also be shown to students at assemblies.
With regard to fundraising, the two main charities under consideration, as of now, are the World Wildlife Fund and Jaiya’s Animal Rescue. WWF has an animal adoption program under which a US$55 donation goes toward rescuing a member of an endangered species. JAR is an organization with which YCIS already has ties, because various students have contributed toward JAR’s efforts in the past. These ties can be strengthened through further cooperation with the organization.
With these new initiatives and support from our fellow students and faculty, we hope to encourage an even more eco-friendly community at YCIS.
