Yew Chung team ready for lights out
THE Ecology Action Team at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai's Pudong campus is enthusiastically engaged in a variety of projects to promote awareness and responsibility for our environment.
Last year, a major focus of the team was introducing Earth Hour to Shanghai. Earth Hour simply turns off the city lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. It began in Australia in 2007 and Earth Hour has grown quickly into a global movement.
Last year the students and teachers of YCIS Pudong, signed up and set out to spread the word about Earth Hour. Letters, in Chinese and English, were sent to international schools and businesses. Articles for newspapers and magazines were written to encourage locals to participate, and the Shanghai Education Channel helped by broadcasting part of the school's Earth Hour Assembly on local television.
This year Earth Hour will be even more successful. One of the major improvements is multilingual access for the official Website. YCIS students and staff will soon meet at an assembly to reaffirm their commitment to the global effort.
Afterwards each student will receive a candle to remind them of the importance of taking action to save energy. Then everyone will electronically spread the news about Earth Hour to their families and friends around the world.
Members of the YCIS Ecology Action Team want everyone reading this to join them in Earth Hour 2009. Sign up today at www.earthhour.org.cn. Learn more about how you, your family and friends can help bring the world together to reduce the impact of global warming ... and then spread the word! Lights out on March 28 at 8:30pm for Earth Hour!
