A glimpse of the shape of sounds to come

AN art exhibition that translates sound and music into visual effects has opened at a commercial and exhibition space along the Huangpu River in Pudong.

Titled “Beautiful is in the Waves,” the exhibition, with the help of computer algorithms, 11 architects, professors and artists, has converted classical music of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Chopin, traditional Chinese songs as well as the sound of auto engines into paintings, art installations and videos.

“Sound is very important to every city and the exhibition hopes to bring new cultural content to art galleries, museums, theaters and tourist attractions,” said Lou Yongqi, dean of the College of Design and Innovation of Tongji university.

In one of the exhibits, Zheng Kangyi, a professor with the college, created a series of artworks that combine the portraits of the master composers with abstract patterns based on their distinctive musical music.

Another professor Yu Xin’an engraved patterns extracted from traditional Chinese songs onto a pipa (Chinese lute).

Also, the sound from an Aston Martin roadster DB11 has been converted into metal and interactive installations. Visitors can watch the exhibit while listening to the music.

It is the debut exhibition of the Sound Lab. Situated in a futuristic street developed by the college in an old downtown community in Yangpu District, the lab is among a batch of other innovative labs powered by Tongji, to experiment with new ideas on fashion, material, digital production and food.

The street, which is named N-ICE2035 (Neighborhood of Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship toward 2035), also gives the local residents a chance to explore and experience restaurants, offices and entertainment venues built with new materials and technologies, including robots and artificial intelligence, according to the college.

Date: Through April 5, 10am-10pm

Venue: MIFA 1862
