A virtual ride to ancient fairyland
THIS may be the tallest exhibition in Shanghai — on the 119th floor of Shanghai Tower. The hall has been converted into a peach blossom area, where you can embark on a journey to the legendary fairyland described in Chinese poet Tao Yuanming’s (AD 365-427) work “Peach Blossom Spring,” or “Taohuayuan Ji.”
Taohuayuan, which was discovered by Tao during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 317-420) in today’s Hunan Province, is one of China’s major sacred Taoist places, along with Emei Mountain, Wudang Mountain and Hengshan Mountain.
The secluded area where people live and work in peace has made Taohuayuan a special term, implying utopia in Chinese art and literature, or a gateway to nature.
At the Shanghai Tower exhibition, entitled “Utopia in the Air,” visitors are able to explore and interact with the people of Taohuayuan in virtual reality. For a moment, they will be transported miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Expect warm hospitality and culinary delights at this fairyland. Even more, expect to see the stars on a clear night, recorded by French priest Stanislaus Chevaliev at the Sheshan Observatory some 100 years ago. Chevaliev first arrived in Shanghai in 1883.
