Art institute celebrates 50th anniversary

A major retrospective honoring the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute is underway through January 28.

Entitled “Our Era,” the show features works and archival materials from a constellation of major talents, including Zhang Chongren, Yu Yunjie, Chen Yifei and Wu Dayu.

Established in 1965, the institute was the first professional art organization devoted to oil painting and sculpture created after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Over the years, many of China’s most celebrated artists have been affiliated with the institute.

One of the institute’s brightest stars was Zhang Chongren (1907-1998), one of China’s best-known modern sculptors. After studying at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Zhang returned to China in 1936. The exhibition includes several historical pictures of Zhang.

A highlight of the exhibition is a replica of the monumental painting “Conquer the Office of the President” created by Chen Yifei (1946-2005) and Wei Jingshan.

The oil painting is a milestone in China’s modern art history. The original work is located in the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution in Beijing.

“We are proud of the history of our institute, and its important status in the country,” said Xiao Gu, the institute’s director. “We hope that visitors would go through with us of the history of the museum.”
