Ceramist pulls beauty from flames
French ceramist Christine Fabre is the subject of a new solo exhibition at the Liuli China Museum entitled “From Visible to Invisible: Faith Born From Fire.”
“All is born from fire; any object that has withstood an inferno yet remains standing belongs here,” says Zhang Yi, the curator of the exhibition and also the founder of the museum, which includes a large collection of glassware and ceramic art.
“From Visible to Invisible” will be Fabre’s first solo show in Asia.
According to Zhang, Fabre took her inspiration from a 13th century Song Dynasty (960-1279) vase featuring an ice-crack-like pattern. Over an art career spanning more than three decades, this cracked glaze symbolized for her the beauty of ceramic making.
“I found myself enamored by the glazed in colors of ink and milk and the spider-web-like cracks running across its surface,” Fabre explains. “Chinese ceramics is a part of our global heritage and one that we as Western artists hold dearly.”
