China鈥檚 ancient myths told through comics
AN exhibition underway at the Shanghai China Painting Academy features some of the works recently published by the Shanghai People’s Fine Arts Publishing House about Chinese myths.
The exhibition, “Comics of Chinese Creation Myths,” tells the fascinating stories of mythical heroes, aiming to promote and popularize ancient Chinese culture.
It is part of a big project titled “Where the Dream Begins: Creating the World — Literary and Artistic Works on Chinese Myths.”
Participating artists include Shi Dawei, chairman of the Shanghai Literary Federation and deputy director of the project; Luo Zhongli, a key figure in China’s modern oil painting; and Han Shuo, one of the most famed ink-wash artists in Shanghai.
The works are in comic book style focused on the origins of Chinese civilization. Most are ink-wash paintings.
Oil painting, traditional Chinese painting characterized by a meticulous style with heavy colors, pastels and computer animations are also included to show a diverse range of art genres.
These beautiful traditional paintings are a key to understand the roots of Chinese culture, organizers say.
Seventeen sets of comic books will be released for the exhibition.
Date: Through May 21 (closed on Mondays), 9:30am-4:30pm
