Cologne orchestra back for 2 concerts
The Gurzenich Orchestra Cologne is coming back to Shanghai Grand Theater next week as an encore to its well-received performance in 2010.
The orchestra will present two concerts with different themes on February 20 and 21 — one featuring Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto in A Major” and Strauss’ “Eine Alpensinfonie” and the other featuring Schumann’s “Symphony No. 1 ‘Spring’ in B-flat Major” and Wagner’s “The Valkyrie Act I.”
The orchestra will be conducted by Markus Stenz, the general musical director, while soprano Anja Kampe, bass Eric Halfvarson and tenor Lance Ryan will all join the performance of Wagner’s “The Valkyrie Act I.”
All three artists are famous as Wagner performers.
Kampe has sung many of Wagner’s works in her opera career, such as Freia in “Das Rheingold” and as Gerlinde in “Die Walkure.”
Ryan is known worldwide for major roles in works of Strauss and Wagner. Halfvarson, who has interpreted many of the darkest Verdi and Wagner roles, is noted for the power of his musical interpretation and the searing dramatic insight he brings to the roles.
Wagner’s work is very demanding for opera singers, as it requires not only singing skills but also the ability to work together and deal with the complicated and extensive orchestral construction, according to Ke Hui, secretary general of the Wagner Society in China.
“There are very few opera singers who can manage Wagner’s work, and there are also people who lost their good voice after singing his work,” says Ke.
“It will definitely be a God-given chance to hear the best Wagner performers singing in Shanghai.”
