Exhibition of cities seen from above

THE Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall is hosting an exhibition of aerial photos taken over 55 cities around the world.

Titled “City Air Reading,” the exhibit showcases images taken by Li Zhenyu, the dean of Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning since 2000. It also incorporates Li’s understanding and analysis of urban planning in these cities with the help of miniature models, videos and multi-media artworks.

The 800-square-meter exhibition will run through February 12.

“Overlooking these cities from the air is just like reading books about these cities,” Li explains. “Actually, every urban planner makes the blueprint of a city through aerial imagery.”

Beside each picture, Li explains in both Chinese and English how he took the photo, while also offering his own analysis and insights.

He also elucidates 10 key elements of a city through the photo-taking experience. These include landscapes, shapes, boundaries, structures, fabrics and height.

Date: Through February 12, 9am-5pm

Venue: 2/F, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

Address: 100 People’s Ave
