Exhibition toys with reality

“The Shadow Never Lies,” an exhibition featuring over three dozen artists from around the world is on display at M21 in Pudong New Area through the end of July. The artworks on view include photographs, video and film pieces, as well as paintings and installations.

Curated by Jiang Jiehong and Mark Nash, the exhibition explores themes of imagination and reality.

“The shadow itself hinders or distorts the existence it reflects,” said Jiang. “In my eyes, the shadow is not only an art practice, but also a new concept to enable us to experience difference and distance.”

Artists participating in the show include Lu Yang, who uses infrared video to register heat from human bodies to develop “anti-humanist bio-art.”

While Poklong Anading’s “Anonymity” series presents photographs of people holding circular mirrors in front of their faces, reflecting sunlight back to the viewer.

Meanwhile, in Han Kyungwoo’s 2014 installation work “Projected Specimen,” the artist uses taxidermy animals to recreate shadow puppet images made with human hands.

Date: Through July 31, 10am-6pm

Venue: M21

Address: 1929 Pudong Ave, Pudong New Area
