Exploring violence and modification in exhibition

INNOVATIVE artist Shi Yong explores violence and modification in his “Under the Rule” exhibition currently underway at ShanghART until the end of this month.
This exhibition continues the concept of the artist’s solo exhibition in 2015. He dismantles, cuts, welds, shapes and colors objects to dissolve the original physical appearance of them.
For Shi, the height of 1.36 meters is critical. Any artwork at the exhibition, if higher than 1.36 meters, had to be chopped from a 110-degree angle.
“You may call it ‘violence,’ but I would polish the surface, which is a kind of ‘modification’,” he explains.
At the exhibition, the fractured objects are used as a metaphor of the body and the scene as a controlled container, which are important and necessary to Shi. They are the translation of another kind of reality, as well as the unrecoverable evidence that the body is lost and abstracted.
Born in Shanghai in 1963, Shi graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Shanghai Light Industrial School in 1984. He is one of the representatives among contemporary Chinese artists who worked on installation and video at an early stage.
His works have been widely exhibited in China and abroad since 1993.
His artworks associate with a wide range of media, including installation, performance, photography and video.
