Film documenting painter wins praise

“CHEN Jialing,” the latest documentary film produced by award-winning filmmaker Jia Zhangke, was hailed by both critics and audience in the city when it was premiered last week at the Shanghai Film Museum.
The movie will hit the big screen nationwide in March.
It’s considered the first biographical documentary film about the life and artistic achievements of a Chinese painter in the history of Chinese cinema. When it was screened during the Rome Film Festival, the film received high praise from the festival’s director, Marco Mueller, who said it helped Western audiences learn more about contemporary Chinese artists and the charm of Chinese culture.
Born in 1937 in Hangzhou, the Shanghai-based artist Chen Jialing is a well known Chinese painter. His life and career have undergone several historical stages through World War II, the “cultural revolution” (1966-76) and the ensuing reform and opening up of China.
Chen is also an innovator, applying impressionism and abstraction to traditional Chinese ink-wash painting. He has also made some crossover attempts, such as using ink-wash patterns on porcelain, silk attire and classical rosewood furniture.
The 66-minute film is helmed by young directors Ye Tian and Gu Yugao. For three years, it records how the artist, in his 70s, went to 12 famous mountains to draw new landscape paintings.
“We don’t just focus on Chen’s creations,” says Jia. “Chen’s experience is also a spiritual course for many Chinese intellectuals of his time. In a sense, the film displays the power of art and the contemporary art history of China.”
