Foster conducts orchestra

THE Marseille Opera Orchestra is visiting China for the first time under the baton of American conductor Lawrence Foster.

The program will feature arias from Bizet’s “Carmen,” Gounod’s “Faust,” Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” as well as Bizet’s “Suite de l’Arlésienne,” Faure’s “Suite de Pelléas et Mélisande” and Saint-Saëns’ “Sansom et Dalila: Bacchanale.”

“I think the Faure should be known and loved; and many of the beautiful parts of L’Arlesienne, some known, some not,” Foster said.

The orchestra was founded in Marseille in 1965 and now has 88 musicians. Foster has been the music director of the orchestra since the 2012-2013 season after completing a 10-year tenure as artistic director and chief conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra.

American mezzo-soprano Jennifer Holloway will be performing with the orchestra. She studied at the University of Georgia and Manhattan School of Music and took part in the young artist program at Opera Theatre of St Louis.

Holloway has performed Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni” with the Pittsburgh Opera, Tebaldo in “Don Carlos” with the Metropolitan Opera and Magnolia in Francesca Zambello’s production of “Show Boat” with the Washington National Opera.

This marks the first time Holloway has collaborated with Foster. “I think the world of Jennifer Holloway — a true rising star! She is as great a singer as she is beautiful,” Foster said.
