Illustrator brings scenes of old Shanghai to life

“Small Books — Big World,” an exhibition of illustrations by He Youzhi, is currently on view at Shanghai University’s Fine Art College.
As a master illustrator of lianhuan hua — palm-sized cartoon books — the 92-year-old He is known for his delightful scenes of old Shanghai.Lianhuan hua originally targeted children and semi-literate readers. Some featured folk legends and operas and a number included images from noted illustrators.
The popularity of lianhuan hua ended with the start of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). From the late 1970s to the mid-1980s these little picture books made a comeback. Many new works came into print, adapting literary works from China and overseas.
Born in Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province in 1922, He began to draw cartoons in 1949. Over the years, he created numerous volumes, sets and series. He also drew illustrations for novels and created art works for children.He’s works “360 Trades in Old Shanghai” and “Old Shanghainese in Longtang” were exhibited at the World Expo Shanghai 2010. He has also held exhibitions in France, Singapore and elsewhere.
Many of the drawings on display depict traditional Shanghai lane games, such as cricket fighting, kicking shuttlecocks and jumping rope.
“These drawings remind me of childhood when classmates and friends played in the neighborhood after school, revealing once-familiar scene from a bygone era,” concluded Hu Jianjun, curator of the exhibition.
