Irish play adapted for local stage

A CHINESE production of Marie Jone’s classic play “Stones in His Pockets” is being staged at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center through January 8.

The show stars He Ping and Liu Xuanrui, and is directed by Fan Chongren.

“The play explores the parallels as well as the differences between the movies and real life,” explained director Fan.

“If you ask what ‘Stones in His Pockets’ is really saying, everyone who enters the theater will have his or her own answer. Two core things will be discussed in the play — hope and sense of belongings,” he added.

Fan first saw the play four years ago and then decided to produce his own version.

The story focuses on a Hollywood movie, “The Quiet Valley,” being filmed in rural County Kerry, Ireland. Two local men, Jake Quinn and Charlie Conlon, are among the many locals who have been cast as extras. Both men have show business ambitions, and see the film as a springboard to bigger and better things.

The actors who play Quinn and Conlon also perform 13 other roles, including that of the film’s beautiful but flighty American starlet. The duo remain on stage, instantly shifting back and forth between roles with adjustments to voice, posture, gesture and the occasional costume or prop change.

“The cooperation between us in this play strongly relies on trust for each other,” said the award-winning actor He.

Born in 1955 in Belfast, the playwright Marie Jones often rooted her works in authentic Irish culture. Her characters are inspired by people she had met in her own life.

Jones has received multiple awards and is highly-acclaimed for her wit as well as cultural commentary.

“People need to tell stories; they need to relate and make sense of what they experience, to heal and understand, laugh and let go, but not everyone can be heard,” the playwright said.
