Laser, water splash for 'Red Mansion'

"A DREAM of Red Mansion" has been told many times, many ways in multiple media. Now there will be a dazzling laser light and water show on October 2-5.

The balletic show on Silver Pickax Lake in Changfeng Park will also be performed during the six-month World Expo 2010. It is said to be China's first such spectacular performance.

The show will heighten anticipation of Li Shaohong's remake of the classic 1987 TV serial adaptation of "A Dream of Red Mansion." The new 50-episode series will be released early next year.

The water-and-light extravaganza is also directed by Li. High technology and multimedia approaches combining laser and sound will create 10 vivid scenes from the upcoming TV series.

These include the homecoming of imperial concubine Jia Yuanchun, the wedding of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu burying fallen flowers.

Based on a famous 18th-century novel by Cao Xueqin, the show centers on the tragic love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin against the backdrop of a declining feudal family.

The stage on the lake features giant laser projections of water, brilliant lights, and also a ballet performance by actors in the TV series, including Jiang Mengjie who plays Jia and Yu Xiaotong who plays Lin.

"There are so many adaptations of the classic, from screen works to opera productions," says director Li. "I want to present the romantic flavor of the classic in a creative way beyond traditional art forms.

"'A Dream of Red Mansion' is more than a novel. It is a symbol of love and youth," she adds.
