Legal battle rages after World War II

International Channel Shanghai will air "The Tokyo Trials," a three-episode documentary series starting tonight about how Japan's World War II criminals were brought to justice.

The trials lasted more than two-and-a-half years, including the most participating countries and the longest court session time.

ICS digs into the records of what transpired in that Tokyo courtroom and will broadcast some never-before seen footage. The series also includes analysis of this historic event from scholars in China, Japan, Germany and the United States.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio also speaks with ICS, sharing his views on the trials, the current Japanese government and his outlook on Sino-Japanese relations going forward.

In this legal war, the guns and bombs are shelved in favor of words and evidence. The series documents how the Chinese delegation overcame various difficulties to present their case. It also discusses why the emperor of Japan was not tried and why some people in Japan still deny the Nanjing Massacre and the horrors perpetrated by the infamous Unit 731.

Valuable sequences about the trials have been obtained from the National Archives of the United States. Descendants of those who participated of the trials have also been interviewed.

The documentary series will air on ICS at 8pm from September 1 to 3.
