Local masters exhibit jade sculptures

AN exhibition of jade carving in Hongkou District showcases Shanghai-style jade sculpting done by local masters.
Traditional jade carving in Shanghai is among the four major sculpting schools in China. All of them are known for their simple, delicate, stylish and beautiful styles.
The 12 jade-carving masters, aged between 34 and 48 years old, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition, which included a workshop, on February 25.
Each of them is exhibiting their masterpieces at the month-long exhibition.
Zheng Shengshuai, the heritage master of Shanghai-style jade work and amber carving, is exhibiting his creation, “the two ferocious gigantic guardians,” which has been taken from Chinese legendary tales.
The award-winning young master Lin Guohua, who is well-known for his Buddha sculptures and 12 Chinese zodiac signs, is displaying one of his Buddha creations.
Other artworks in different kinds of jade stones, colors and styles are about nature, animals, Chinese gods and mythological figures.
The masters will also give lectures to introduce the art of traditional jade carving and offer free jade evaluation services to visitors.
The Hundred Masters Workshop was initiated last year to promote Chinese and overseas heritage skills among local citizens as well as allowing the artists to meet each other to create some “trans-boundary” artwork.
Israeli silversmith Avinoam Israelov is the first artist to demonstrate his skills when he worked at a studio in December and January.
After the jade exhibition, a Croatian sculptor will display his miniature sculptures at the workshop. Meanwhile, negotiations are also ongoing with a leatherware master from Thailand and a goldsmith from Italy to show their creations at the workshop.
