Movie prototypes from 'Alien,' 'Star Wars'
PROTOTYPE models from famous movies, such as "Alien" and "Star Wars," will be exhibited for three months beginning in early August at the Oriental Shangbo Creative Industry Park (3539 Dongfang Road) in Pudong.
The exhibition will also include discussions on the latest techniques in making movie prototypes, and acclaimed New Zealand film maker Peter Jackson is expected to attend, among other directors of note.
On display will be the life-size horrifying creature from the "Alien" series, a model of Boba Fett from the "Star Wars" saga, a cinemaquette of Aragorn from "Lord of the Rings," and many characters.
Many of the prototype models are presented by the Weta Workshop, a five-time Oscar-winning conceptual design and physical manufacturing facility for the world's entertainment and creative industries.
The company provided models and special effects for "Avatar," "District 9," "King Kong," "Chronicles of Narnia" and "Lord of the Rings."
Richard Taylor, cofounder and director of Weta Workshop, will bring classic prototype models and attend forums on trends in film prototype techniques.
Taylor says some of his models were made in China's Guangdong Province, such as weapons and armor for "Lord of the Rings" and "Avatar." China provides expert craftsmanship, he says.
The exhibition will also become a platform for exchange for young film talents in China.
The exhibition is initiated by Hong Kong director Stanley Tong, who promotes Chinese cinema to the world.
"The exhibition is a good opportunity for us to learn advanced cinematic techniques from our foreign counterparts," Tong says.
The exhibition will include a charity auction of limited edition film character models. Proceeds will go to the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to victims of the April earthquake in Yushu County, Qinghai Province.
