鈥楳ozart!鈥 ready to rock Culture Square
AS a Christmas gift, SAIC Shanghai Culture Square is bringing the Austrian musical “Mozart!” to the city.
Produced by Vereinigte Buehnen Wien (VBW), “Mozart!” centers on the struggles of the famous composer Mozart with the world around him, as well as the timeless drama of growing up and growing older.
“The profound philosophical message common in German-Austrian musicals can speak to Chinese audiences, who also enjoyed quite rich cultural legacies of this type,” said Fei Yuanhong, program director of Shanghai Culture Square.
The character Mozart is portrayed as a talented rock star in the musical. Throughout the show, a child whom only he can see offers him artistic inspiration.
“Though Mozart is widely considered a great classic musician, he was quite avant-garde and understood by few people in his time. A rock-star image can perfectly reflect the real Mozart, as I see him,” says Silvia Neureiter, Consul General of Austrian Consulate General in Shanghai.
Oedo Kuipers, who played the role of Mozart in the 2015 resident edition in Austria, will also star in the musical in Shanghai.
Maximilian Mann, who played Emperor Franz Joseph in the musical “Elisabeth” in 2014 here in Shanghai, will play Colloredo in “Mozart!”
“It is the first time for me to play a bad guy, but I like it. Colloredo has a strong and tough personality, desiring power over science and art,” says Mann.
The musical will be performed in German with Chinese and English subtitles.
