Outdoor concert at botanical garden

This year’s outdoor concert series at the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden is scheduled for May 14 and 15. The two-night event will include music from film scores and romantic Latin American ballads.

The annual concert, hosted by Shanghai Media Group, has become a highlight of the city’s spring cultural calendar. Over its history, the concert has drawn well known orchestras from around the world.

According to organizer Shen Shuqiang, last year’s shows attracted over 10,000 listeners.

The first night of this year’s event will focus on melodies from blockbuster films such as  “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “007: Spectre,” “Jurassic Park” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Scenes from the movies will also be projected onto a screen above the stage.

On the second night, Argentine tenor Jose Cura will cooperate with veteran conductor Robertas Servenikas and soprano Linda Ballova on a host of steamy Latin American love songs.

Excerpts from Bernstein’s musical “West Side Story” will also be newly interpreted by the tenor.

Prior to each night’s big event, there will be family-friendly interactive displays of original Chinese music and traditional instruments.
