Paying homage to pioneers of modern Chinese art
THE exhibition “Pioneering: Chinese Artists Abroad in France and Chinese Modern Art (1911-1949)” is currently on display at the Long Museum West Bund through June 9.
The whole project, made up of a main display with two special studies, is supported by China National Arts Fund.
It features more than 160 works by over 40 artists, including collections from the Long Museum, public and private institutions as well as individuals.
Going abroad to further one’s studies was a notable phenomenon in the Chinese cultural history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From the 1870s, many students traveled abroad mostly on government scholarships. They studied a variety of disciplines including artistic, economic and political subjects.
In the field of the fine arts, the majority of the artists such as Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong and Yan Wenliang attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in France, primarily studying drawing, oil painting and sculpture.
There, they learned about the classical, realist and naturalist art of the Western academy, as well as various Western modernist schools.
These artists who studied in France then returned home and decided to modernize Chinese art. They soon came to be seen as the principal pioneers and practitioners of modernist culture in 20th century Chinese art.
Undoubtedly they became one of the most important cultural forces active in China in the first half of the 20th century; they founded, developed, changed and enriched the Chinese art of the period.
Therefore, in the eyes of the organizers, the exhibition has a critical significance in that it reviews the history of modern Chinese art.
