Photographer calls for images from public
Multitalented artist Wang Xiaohui rose to fame back in 2001 with her stunningly personal best-seller “My Visual Diary.” Now, in honor of the 15th anniversary of her groundbreaking work, Wang is inviting members of the public to submit images from their own daily lives for use in a future exhibition.
Wang first announced her plans for the exhibition in September during Shanghai Design Week.
Those who want to submit photos (with corresponding text) can do so via her WeChat public account, “Wang Xiaohui Art.” Submissions will be accepted until the end of the year.
“I am quite interested to see the visual diary of more ordinary people,” she said. “That’s the reason I organized this activity.”
Born in Tianjin in 1957, Wang studied at Shanghai Tongji University, where she met architecture professor Yu Lin. Unfortunately Yu, whom Wang describes as her “once-in-a-lifetime soul mate,” died in 1991 in a traffic accident in the Czech Republic while they were driving to Wang’s first solo show.
Badly injured herself, Wang captured her wounded face while recovering in the hospital after the accident. This haunting image was later included in her celebrated “Diary.”
Wang is now a cultural ambassador between Germany and China, promoting cultural exchanges in art, literature and architecture.
