Prize-winning paintings now on view
In today’s digitized world, painting is still alive and well, as evidenced by the high-calibre works on display at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum for the “2016 John Moores Painting Prize (China) Exhibition.”
Organized by John Moores Liverpool Exhibition Trust, College of Fine Arts at Shanghai University and Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, this is the fourth edition of the John Moores Painting Prize (China), and 2,850 entries from China including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were received.
First held in 1957, John Moores Painting Prize is the UK’s best-known painting competition. In 2010, the competition was introduced into China.
The exhibition features the works of 81 short-listed artists, including the prize-winning pieces. Five prize-winning pieces from 2014 John Moores Painting Prize in the UK are also exhibited.
Award-winners are selected by an independent jury based solely on quality. Anonymous selection and open submission lay the foundation for the long-term success of the prize as it distinguishes itself by not taking artists’ past achievements and exhibition careers into consideration.
As in previous editions, this year’s jury consisted of three members from the UK and two from China.
The top prize in this year’s China competition went to Lang Shuilong for his piece “Fundamental Tool.” Lang is a graduate from China’s Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou.
