Quorum Ballet dance to Stravinsky’s controversial tune

QUORUM Ballet, one of the most celebrated ballet troupes in the world, will stage the acclaimed “Rite of Spring” on January 24 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
The two-part ballet, by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, is one of the most controversial ballets ever written. A Paris audience made their displeasure known to the composer when the show made its debut in the French capital in 1913.
Today, the ballet is still considered to be one of the best examples of Modernism in music. It is different from other traditional dance performances as it uses a creative and avant-garde format with music, rhythm and harmony.
The story itself is concerned with society in pagan Russia, which every year must sacrifice a virgin to ensure the gods will be pleased in order to continue the group’s survival.
Ultimately, one such girl is chosen, and as the other performers visually align themselves with the earth, she is forced by the elders of the tribe to dance herself to death.
Throughout the whole ballet, Stravinsky, then a relatively unknown composer, uses unconventional music, to not only create distance between the modern observer and the pagans on stage, but to bewilder, excite, and generally keep the listener alert through its unpredictability. Following the debut of the piece, Stravinsky’s fame had been assured.
This time, the ‘Rite of Spring: Made in China”, will see a combination of seven dancers from the Quorum Ballet and seven of China’s most renowned dancers, with guest choreographer Xie Xin. The piece merges the two cultures and presents a dialogue in dance on the concepts of spring and rebirth.
