Rich, spontaneous and elaborate: art at its best

SPONTANEOUS experimentation with the materials of the new century, technical and artistic sophistication and a constructive intellectualism are explored in a new exhibition held by three contemporary artists.
Fu Shuai, Liu Xi and Xiong Yanjun animate their works with scrupulously elaborated texture at the Art+ Shanghai Gallery.
Fu borrows the Chinese rubbing techniques to produce the paper on which he incorporates in his optical illusions. His paintings are like traps into which the viewer falls.
The protruding visual forms and the hyper-realistic sense of the painted textures push viewers’ perceptions of dimensionality and reality.
Liu crafts her immaculately produced, offbeat porcelain objects via new formations and materials.
One of her works, “MaMa,” a collection of washboards, reminds people of a mother’s daily hard work to wash clothes by hand for a large family before washing machines came into use.
Splitting her time between Shanghai and Jingdezhen, the capital of porcelain in Jiangxi Province, Liu tries to push the technical and aesthetic boundaries of ceramics.
Xiong has raised an open-ended question in his seemingly monochromatic paintings with an extraordinary subtle range of colors.
The common impression of his works is his reflective attitude toward his surroundings and a consequent quest of the media he uses.
