Russian State Ballet brings classics

THE Russian State Ballet will bring three ballet classics — “The Sleeping Beauty,” “The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake” — to Shanghai audiences.

All of the three shows are representative productions of the troupe, led directly by the Russian State Ministry of Culture. They will feature lavish scenes and impelling scores. Artists in the troupe have been praised by critics and audiences for the strength, intensity and power in their performances.

Based on a famous fairy tale, “The Sleeping Beauty” tells the story of Princess Aurora who is being cursed by the evil Carabosse. The Lilac Fairy weakens the curse and, instead of dying, Princess Aurora falls into a deep sleep until a handsome prince kisses her to wake her up.

The fantastic two-act ballet “The Nutcracker” is adapted from a fairy tale by ETA Hoffmann that takes the audience on a journey through a fantasy world where a girl meets a prince.

In the romantic production “Swan Lake,” the dancer in the role of Odile will do 32 turns with fouette, known for being extremely difficult. The show also gives the classic a new ending.
